Dimulai dari Lembah Semangko di Lampung, menyambung ke Suoh, Kepahiang, Ketahun, Kerinci, Muaralabuh, Singkarak, Maninjau, Rokan Kiri, Batang Gadis, Angkola, Alas, Tangse, Seulimeum, hingga Banda Aceh.
Dikelilingi gunung-gunung api tua, 11 di antaranya masih aktif, lembah-lembah ini merupakan tempat mengendapnya abu vulkanis yang kaya unsur hara. Air berlimpah dan sebagian terbendung dalam cekungan yang terbentuk akibat gerakan tanah ataupun karena letusan gunung api purba.
Danau-danau pun tercipta; lima danau di Suoh dan Danau Ranau (Lampung), Danau Kerinci (Jambi), Danau Singkarak, Danau Diatas, dan Danau Dibawah (Sumatera Barat), Danau Toba (Sumatera Utara), serta Danau Laut Tawar (Aceh).
Deretan lembah itu juga kaya dengan air panas alami dan menyimpan energi panas bumi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian F Junghun (1854), USGS menyebutkan, sedikitnya terdapat 23 sumber air panas di sepanjang lembah Bukit Barisan yang berpotensi menghasilkan energi panas bumi. Survei yang dilakukan Geothermal Energy New Zealand Ltd pada 1986 bahkan menemukan 37 sumber air panas.
Tak hanya itu. Berimpit dengan deretan lembah, mengular "sabuk emas" yang memasyhurkan Sumatera sebagai Svarnadwipa. Kata dari bahasa Sanskerta itu berarti "Pulau Emas" seperti tertera dalam Prasasti Nalanda yang dipahat pada tahun 860 Masehi.
William Marsden, dalam bukunya, History of Sumatera (1783), menyebutkan, Sumatera pernah diduga sebagai Ophir, tempat armada Solomon (Sulaiman) mengambil muatan emas dan gading. Meski dugaan tentang Ophir menurut Marsden tak berdasar, pulau ini memang penghasil emas tiada tara.
Logam mulia ini, terutama ditemukan di kawasan tengah pulau di sepanjang Bukit Barisan seperti di Martabe, Bangko, Rawas, Lebong, dan Natal. Minangkabau dianggap sebagai daerah terkaya sehingga Belanda banyak mendirikan loji di Padang.
Menurut Marsden, di daerah Minangkabau saja terdapat tidak kurang dari 1.200 lokasi tambang emas.
"Sebanyak 283.000 gram-399.600 gram setiap tahun tersimpan di Padang, di pasar bebas, atau di tangan perseorangan. Sementara itu, kira-kira 28.000 gram dipasarkan di Nalabu, di Natal kira-kira sebanyak 23.000 gram, dan di Mukomuko 17.000 gram," tulis Marsden.
TM Van Leuwen memberikan gambaran lebih komplet soal produksi logam mulia dari Sumatera. Dalam tulisannya di Journal of Geochemical Exploration, edisi ke-50, 1994, dia memperkirakan, total emas yang dikeruk dari Sumatera sejak eksplorasi Belanda hingga 1994 mencapai 91 ton dan perak sebanyak 937 ton.
Jauh sebelum Belanda datang dan mengeruk emas dari Sumatera, perdagangan emas dari pulau ini sudah berlangsung lama. Dalam buku Barus Seribu Tahun yang Lalu (2003), Marie-France Dupoizat dan Daniel Perret menyebutkan, pengelana Tome Pires pada awal abad ke-16 mencatat bahwa emas diperdagangkan di seluruh pelabuhan di Sumatera, terutama di Barus.
Pelabuhan tua di pantai barat Sumatera Utara ini telah disebutkan dalam karya Ptolomeus, Geographia, yang ditulis pada abad ke-2 Masehi.
Selain mencari kapur barus, para pedagang dari berbagai negara juga memburu emas yang banyak diperdagangkan pribumi di pelabuhan ini. Logam mulia ini diduga dibawa dari sungai-sungai yang berhulu di sekitar Bukit Barisan.
Dengan segenap kelimpahan daya hidup, tak mengherankan jika lembah-lembah ini telah lama menarik manusia untuk menetap di sana. Jejak kebudayaan batu besar atau megalitikum yang tersebar luas di sepanjang lembah ini menjadi bukti bahwa manusia purba telah bermukim di sana.
Arkeolog dari Balai Arkeologi Palembang, Tri Marhaeni S Budisantosa, mengatakan, temuan megalitik di Pulau Sumatera kebanyakan tersebar di lembah-lembah sepanjang Bukit Barisan, mulai dari Liwa di Lampung hingga di sekitar Kerinci di Jambi.
"Misalnya, megalitik di Kerinci dan Merangin ditemukan sejajar dengan Bukit Barisan sepanjang 80 km," katanya.
Di wilayah tersebut telah ditemukan 21 megalitik berbentuk silinder, serta satu buah megalitik berbentuk bulat. Selain itu, ditemukan juga enam kompleks kubur tempayan. "Mereka memilih daerah ini, terutama karena tanahnya subur, cocok buat bercocok tanam."
Banyaknya batuan andesit, jenis batuan vulkanik, yang merupakan bahan baku megalitik, turut mendukung tumbuh suburnya kebudayaan tua ini di sekitar lembah Kerinci dan Merangin. Selain itu, dataran tinggi yang dikepung perbukitan ini juga sangat cocok untuk mengembangkan sistem keyakinan mereka. Para pendukung kebudayaan megalitik ini percaya, gunung-gunung tinggi merupakan tempat bersemayam arwah nenek moyang.
Budi Wiyana, sejawat Budi di Balai Arkeologi Palembang, juga menyebutkan alasan yang sama dengan ditemukannya sebaran situs megalitik di Lahat dan Pagar Alam, Sumatera Selatan.
"Manusia menghuni daerah ini karena subur, dan alasan praktis lain seperti dekat dengan sumber air yang melimpah dan bahan baku batuan beku andesit," kata Budi Wiyana.
Menurut Budi, tradisi megalitik yang ditemukan di kawasan ini sangat lengkap, mulai dari dolmen, menhir, arca, arca menhir, teras berundak, lumpang batu, batu dakon, dan batu datar. Berbagai peninggalan megalitik ini membuktikan bahwa kawasan itu telah dihuni manusia setidaknya sejak 2.500 tahun sebelum Masehi.
Siang itu, Budi menunjukkan deretan batu-batu besar berbentuk meja (dolmen) yang bergeletakan di persawahan menghijau di Tegurwangi, Pagar Alam. Di dekatnya terdapat empat batu besar berukir yang masing-masing mengggambarkan orang tengah mengendarai gajah.
Selain menunjukkan kemajuan budaya saat itu, berupa kemampuan menjinakkan gajah, batu berukir juga membuktikan bahwa masyarakat zaman itu sudah mengenal pengecoran logam. "Untuk membuat ukiran di batu itu, hampir dipastikan menggunakan logam," jelas Budi.
Batu-batu raksasa juga ditemukan di rimbun perkebunan kopi milik Robinson (64) di Desa Tanjung Batu, Keca Tanjung Sakti, Kabupaten Lahat. Batu dolmen berukuran panjang sekitar 2 meter dan lebar 1 meter itu ditumpukkan di atas batu-batu kecil di keempat sudutnya.
Di Desa Pajarbulan, Kecamatan Tanjung Sakti, Kabupaten Lahat, peninggalan megalitik ditemukan di pekarangan belakang rumah warga. Batuan ini biasa disebut warga sebagai batu tiang enam. Arkeolog menyebutnya batu tetralit.
Kegunaan tetralit masih menjadi perdebatan para ahli. "Beberapa ahli berpendapat, tetralit merupakan landasan atau umpak tiang rumah," kata Budi. Pendapat ini muncul karena di ujung atas tiang batu itu ada semacam cerukan yang diperkirakan untuk meletakkan tiang rumah.
